These are the mantas you are most likely to encounter around German Channel each season. Some, like F1 Mechas, F4 Camy and F2 Romana, seem to be in this area year-round, while the rest usually come from October to May each year.

- Popular Females
M4 BUIK - Medium Male
Buik is Palauan for "guy". This male has black blotches on the left wing edge and inner left lobe, is a regular at the German cleaning stations, and very friendly to divers.
F4 CAMY - Small Female
Seen at German Channel since 2006, she never seems to grow, and has been fading in color to a light brown after a bad fishing line injury in 2008, which left her with a deep cut on her left back wing edge. She likes interacting with divers and other mantas, and is the only small manta ever seen leading the feeding train. She is almost always at German Channel.
M10 DARTH VADER - Small Male
Black morph manta, one of the 12 black morphs seen in Palau to date. This little guy is not shy, but has only been seen a few times at German Channel since 2009. Like most small mantas, he always has one or more remoras with him.
F5 KLOULDIL - Large Female
Klouldil is Palauan for "Big Lady". She has a bitten off tail and a white dorsal fin. She was pregnant in winter 2010, and is only seen in winter months in the feeding trains, but never at the cleaning stations.
F1 MECHAS - Large Female
Mechas is Palauan for addressing an older lady. Seen at German Channel since the 1990's, she has a broken tail, a white spot/scratch on her head, a black mouth scar, and large scar on her left back. She gave birth in Feb 2010. When playful, she will single out and interact with people she knows.
M3 MERKOS - Medium Male
Merkos is Palauan for something sweet. This friendly young male likes to pose for divers, and has a black scar on the left upper mouth, and a recent fishing line cut on his left lobe.
F8 RENG - Large Female
Reng is Palauan for spirit. She has a white growth over her right eye and an obvious kink in her right wing. She does not like large groups of divers or strobes, and is rarely seen in the trains.
F2 ROMANA - Large Female
Romana is my favorite, and the first manta I ever photographed in the late 1980s. She has a dark back with 2 bright white "dimples", and was pregnant winter 2010. She recognizes dive guides and will stop cleaning or feeding to greet divers she likes.
M1 RUBAK - Large Male
Rubak is Palauan to address an older gentleman. He has a black blotch on his left wing edge, and has been around for years. He is most often seen in feeding trains with the large females.
F3 SCARFACE - Large Female
She has many sharkbites and boat scars, and lost her left wingtip between 2006 and 2008. She is seen every year and was pregnant in December 2009 and December 2010.
M2 SILVERBACK - Large Sized Male
He has a black scar on his left upper mouth from an old fish hook injury, and has an unusual grey back color. He is seen every year at German Channel, and usually feeds with the 2 largest females there, Mechas and Romana.
F7 SILVERTIP - Medium Sized Female
This friendly accident-prone manta is a
regular at German Channel. She has
had several fish hook and line injuries.
Recently she got a deep cut from a boat
strike on right mouth to back w/ a blue
paint line. She has 2 fishing line cuts
on the back edges of her wings.
